Rights Based Approaches
Why It Matters to us: Promoting rights-based approaches is essential to empowering Africa’s youth,as their development and well-being are crucial for the continent’s long-term stability and growth.
i. Context:
Africa’s rapidly growing population includes a significant proportion of children as well young women and men, many of whom face barriers to self actualisation by failing to access resources- quality education, information, participation, healthcare, among other rights.
ii. The Pan-African Policy Institute’s Role:

Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
Why It Matters to Us: Advancing gender equality is key to Africa’s overall growth. Empowering women and girls strengthens communities, drives sustainable progress, and is fundamental to achieving inclusive development for all.
iv. Context:
Women and girls in Africa continue to face significant challenges, including genderbased violence, limited access to education and economic opportunities, and political marginalisation. Gender inequality restricts development and progress.

Urbanisation and Sustainable Cities
Why It Matters to Us: As urban centers are central to economic opportunity and innovation in Africa, sustainable city planning is essential for creating livable, thriving spaces that serve all citizens and drive Africa’s inclusive growth.
vii. Context: Africa is experiencing rapid urbanisation, leading to overcrowded cities, informal
settlements, and strained urban infrastructure. Many cities lack adequate housing, sanitation, and public services, affecting millions of people.

Migration and Displacement
Why It Matters to us: Recognizing migration as a rights-based issue helps to protect the dignity of those on the move and nurtures social cohesion, critical for regional stability and development.
x. Context:
Economic opportunities, conflict, political instability, and climate change are driving mass migration and displacement within and across African borders. Migrants and displaced populations often face discrimination, inadequate living conditions, loss of identity therefore no recognition therefore a lack of access to basic services.
xi. The Pan-African Policy Institute’s Role:
Advocate for policies that promote and protect the rights of migrants and displaced populations, ensuring their access to basics and legal protections. Work with governments to develop frameworks for managing migration and integrating displaced populations into host
communities.

Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding
Why It Matters to us: Addressing the underlying causes of conflict and fostering peace is critical to ensure a secure environment in which all Africans can thrive, contributing to the continent’s overall resilience and progress.
xiii. Context:
Gender Based Violence, Ideological differences, violent extreemism, Armed conflicts, political instability, and resource based competition continue to affect several regions of Africa, leading to displacement, loss of life, and economic devastation. Young women and men are often victims and recruits for deployment as instruments of violence into conflicts, thereby embeding the memory of conflict and exacerbating social instability.
xiv. The Pan-African Policy Institute’s Role:
Conduct research on the root causes of conflict and advocate for policies that promote conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and reconciliation. Focus on engaging youth in peacebuilding efforts and preventing the exploitation of vulnerable populations.
xv. Potential Impact:
Strengthened peacebuilding initiatives, reduced incidences of conflict, and greater involvement of youth in creating stable, peaceful societies.
